Debagle vs Kialo: live debate or a written argument map?
Choose Debagle for timed spoken exchanges with another person. Choose Kialo’s written argument-map format when the group needs to inspect and refine reasons over time. Kialo Edu is a separate classroom-focused option.

One conversation, two ways to make reasoning visible
A live debate makes you decide what to say next. A written argument map lets you decide where a reason belongs. The first tests listening and response under time pressure; the second supports careful inspection of the links between claims.
If a group keeps talking past itself, the right question may be “do we need a shared record of the argument?” If individuals already understand the issue but need to practise explaining it aloud, the live format can be useful. These are editorial distinctions about the activities, not measured claims that one service produces better thinkers.
What Kialo and Kialo Edu describe
Kialo uses a branching structure for supporting and opposing claims. Kialo Edu describes a free education-focused discussion tool. For school use, review the education service and institutional requirements rather than assuming a general consumer debate app offers classroom management.
The written format can also help a group notice that several people are responding to different premises. Put the main claim in one sentence, then separate an objection to the evidence from an objection to the proposed consequence.

What Debagle adds to a spoken exchange
Debagle’s in-person mode lets two participants bring a statement or open question, share one camera and microphone and alternate timed turns. A debate receives a review and score; an open question receives a reflection and common ground without a winner.
Speaking can reveal ambiguity quickly because another person may stop you after the session and explain what they heard. It also has a cost: you have less time to look up evidence or reorganize a complicated chain of reasoning. Use a narrower motion when you have shorter turns.
Choose the format using these questions
A comparison is useful when it changes a decision. Use the table to identify the constraint you actually have, then test a small task rather than moving an entire group to a new platform immediately.

| Constraint | Written map | Live human exchange |
|---|---|---|
| People are in different time zones | Strong reason to consider it | Requires simultaneous participation |
| We need a record to edit together | Claims remain visible for revision | Use the transcript to revisit what was said |
| We want to practise speaking and listening | Useful preparation, but not the speaking task | The task happens during the exchange |
| We need teacher-managed participation | Evaluate Kialo Edu | Debagle is not an LMS or school-management tool |
| We have ten minutes together | Map one small branch | Choose one question and short turns |
Combine them in a single practice session
Prepare a three-branch map: your claim, the strongest objection and the condition under which you would change your mind. Explain one branch aloud in a timed turn. Ask your partner to paraphrase it before responding.
After the exchange, revise the map using only what changed. If an example introduced a new premise, add it as a separate claim rather than quietly rewriting the conclusion. The result is a record of learning, not just a cleaner version of the original opinion.
What neither format decides for you
An orderly map can contain a false premise. A polished spoken answer can do the same. Structure improves your ability to inspect a claim; it does not verify the claim automatically. For important factual questions, return to primary sources and explain how they connect to the decision.
Use Debagle when you want a live exchange. Use written mapping when persistence and revision are the priority. Choose the combination if preparation and speaking practice are both part of the job.
Questions people ask
Is Kialo the same as Kialo Edu?
They are related services with different audiences. Kialo Edu explicitly targets education; check its official pages for classroom capabilities.
Can Debagle replace a classroom discussion platform?
Do not assume that. Debagle’s consumer conversation flow is not a school administration or learning-management system.
Which format is better for a complex issue?
A written map helps preserve a complex argument; live conversation can test understanding. Many groups can benefit from preparing in writing and discussing a smaller part aloud.
